Bullet proof vest information

According to the European agrements, body armour to the

level NIJ-3A can to civilians be sold allover the Europian

union without permits, body armor level NIJ-3 and NIJ-4

are considered as military equipment and are connected

to the weapon trade laws.

How to buy a bullet proof vest

If you're planning to buy a bulletproof vest for your

personal protection, here are the things you need to know!

Step 1 : Know the difference between hard, soft body armor and covers.

Hard body armour uses plates of metal, ceramic or polyethylene

material to stop anything up to a rifle bullet or shotgun slug.

They are highly resistant to impact along the face of the plate,

but, especially in the case of non-metallic plates, they are

vulnerable to blows along their edges, requiring careful packing

when shipped. We are using the SAT (Sioen Armour Technology)

hard ballistic plates.

Soft body armor packets uses layers of special fabrics to catch

the bullet in flight and disperse the force of its impact. Soft body

armor can stop bullets from most handguns, shotgun pellets (up

to 12-gauge 00 buckshot), and blunt shrapnel. Soft body armor is

made from woven aramid fibers such as Kevlar or Twaron, or

polyethylene fibers such as Spectra or Dyneema. Most modern

bullet proof vest use different types of fibers to achieve best

identities such as low weight, flexibility, bullet resistant

performance or stab resistant performance.

The cover or carrier is the outer shell of the body armor. The

bullet proof packet is slipped in the cover and together they form

the bullet proof vest. We are using standard size bullet proof

packets so that they can be used in different standard size

covers. There exist different types of covers. Covers for

concealed carry, open carry, military covers, …

Step 2 :Know the available levels of protection

Bulletproof vests are rated according to the amount of blunt force impact they are capable of stopping. (according the bullets they can stop). There are different norms and classifications used in Europe. The American NIJ norms, the British HOSDB norms and de German TR (Technische Richtlinie). All have different properties and in some cases different upgrades. The American NIJ norms are mostly used for international trade. Important levels of protection currently available include the following: NIJ Level II bullet-resistant vests are generally 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick. They can either be worn concealed under a loose-fitting shirt or over clothing. Intend to stop de calibers 9x19mm-.357 magnum. Is in Europe considered as the minimum level of protection. NIJ Level III-A vests are 8 to 10 mm (0.32 to 0.4 inches) thick. they are designed to stop heavier-grain handgun bullets, such as those from a .44 Magnum, and rapid-fire attacks, such as those from a 9-mm submachine gun. There upgrade NIJ01010.04 is the older version and can stop bullet from 9x19mm -.44 Magnum. This upgrade NIJ version is still popular in Europe because the 9x19mm caliber is the most common caliber used in Europe. The upgrade 01010.06 is a newer upgrade and is intend to stop de calibers .357SIG-.44Magnum. The caliber .357 SIG is rather exceptional in Europe however the 9x19+P ammunition levels are used in Russia even as the caliber 9x21 mm and are almost similar to the .357 SIG. The level NIJ-3A is the most used protection level in Europe. NIJ Level III vests incorporate armor plates and are intend to stop rifle bullet with a soft lead core. NIJ Level IV vests incorporate armor plates and are intend to stop rifle bullet with a steel core or AP ammunition from the caliber .30 (7.62mm). NIJ level III and IV can be in conjunction with soft armor or in a Stand Alone plate. Conjunction: bullet is deformed and loses energy at the plate but goes through the plate and is stop by the soft armor. Stand Alone: the bullet is stop inside the plate. No need to carry soft armor under a stand alone plate. No blunt trauma by impact at stand Alone Plate. Armor plates ranging from 1/2 to 3/4 inch (6 to 25 mm) in thickness and 4 to 9 pounds (1.8 to 4.1 kg) in weight. By the increase of stabbings, most bullet proof vest have also a certain level of protection against stabbings. Most stab proof identities used in Europe are according the British HOSDB norms KR1 or KR2 for knives and SP1 or SP2 for Spikes. KR1 or SP1 level : This protection is based on a knife attack with an energy of 24 joules, in which the tip of the blade is not more than 7 mm may penetrate through the vest and with an energy of 36 joules, the point may not penetrate deeper than 20 mm. KR2 or SP2 level : This protection is based on a knife attack with an energy of 33 joules, in which the tip of the blade is not more than 7 mm may penetrate through the vest and with an energy of 50 joules, the point may not penetrate deeper than 20 mm. KR1 Upgrade: We dispose about separate KR1 Upgrade packets. These can be used to provide existent NIJ-3A bullet proof packets (like Kevlar which has only poor stab proof identities) to the higher stab proof identities KR1 against knives. These stab proof packets has to be put in front of the NIJ-3A packet and together they achieve a KR1 level stab protection. Common mistakes. Persons who have no knowledge of the protection levels chose often for the highest protection level. Be aware that how higher the protection level how ticker, how heavier and how more uncomfortable the vest will be. Chose for the right protection level you need!

Step 3 : As do the plates in Level III and IV bulletproof vests, they add weight

and bulk to the vest, reducing mobility; they can, however, be worn under

clothing.

Some bullet-resistant vests are designed to allow the wearer to insert additional armor plates to increase the protection level from the handgun level NIJ-3A tot the rifle level NIJ-4. Before purchasing a bullet proof vest consider if you need this feature.

Step 4 : Decide whether or not you want a concealable vest

Decide whether or not you want a concealable vest. Level II vests can be concealed under a thick, loose shirt or a thinner dress shirt and undershirt. Level III-A vests may require a sweater or suit jacket to be concealed effectively. However, Level III and Level IV vests require at least a heavy jacket or sweater to be concealed or a battle dress uniform, and they are usually worn over clothing. A vest worn under clothing is often black, white or skin color, so that it can be mistaken for an undershirt if you normally wear your shirt with the top button unbuttoned.   A vest worn over clothing can have different colors depending of the expected environment. Colors like Oliv, Kaki or Multicam are mostly available. A vest worn over clothing can be provided with a Molle attachment system to put different accessories on like magazine pouches, holster, medical kit….

Step 5 : Choose a vest that fits you!

A bulletproof vest should fit you reasonably comfortably. Too large a

vest will be ill-fitting and tend to slip, while too small a vest may

expose vital organs to injury.

Most manufacturers make bullet-resistant vests in standard sizes.

These sizes can be compared with a normal T-shirt size not taut on

the body. Bullet proof vest dispose about adjustable straps so that

they can be adjust to the body.

Some bullet proof vest are made “one size fits all” and are mostly

military style bullet proof vests. The have large adjustable straps

who can be adjust at the back side of the bullet proof vest.
